ARTICLE IV.
DEFINITIONS
Traditional Reiki is herein defined as (a) the system of energy healing discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan and brought to the United States by Mrs. Hawayo Takata; and (b) the specific energies of Reiki as opened in those trained in the lineage of John Harvey Gray and Beth Gray, i.e., by the "four/two" attunement method handed down in unbroken lineage from Mikao Usui through Hawayo Takata to John Harvey Gray and Beth Gray, and thence to their students in unbroken descent.
Lineage is herein defined generally as the line of descent of Traditional Reiki from Dr. Mikao Usui through Masters trained with integrity in the knowledge, skills, and empowerments of Reiki. For purposes of the Traditional Reiki Institute, lineage is further defined as those trained in the specific line of descent from Mikao Usui to Chujiro Hayashi to Hawayo Takata to John Harvey Gray and to Beth Gray, and thence to those in unbroken descent from John Harvey Gray and Beth Gray.
Unbroken descent is herein defined as the handing forward of Reiki knowledge received from John Harvey Gray or Beth Gray through Masters who honor the integrity of the lineage by making no attempt or intent to change the original attunements or basic teaching nor to change the master commitments they received.
Broken lineage is herein used to designate those trained at any level in the Gray lineage who subsequently choose to receive training and attunements in Reiki from Masters outside of the Gray lineage. It may also apply to those trained within the Gray lineage who choose to change the attunements or basic teachings, or who break with or change the master commitments. Attunements to other energies than Reiki, which may affect the practitioners ability to channel Reiki, will be evaluated by the Vice President for Membership and Standards and may affect membership decisions or status.
Unbroken lineage is herein used to define Reiki training and attunements received from the same Master who is in good standing and alignment with the Gray lineage. In determining broken or unbroken lineage, the last Reiki training and attunements received governs alignment. If death or illness of the original master in the Gray lineage has prohibited continuity of training and the candidate has been accepted by another master within the lineage as a student, the lineage shall be considered unbroken.
